Overview

Usage

The HIIC is a free tool designed to evaluate generic prevention policies targeting single diseases and age-groups. We leverage our advanced proportional multi-state lifetable (PMSLT) simulation model to provide access to over 100,000 simulated policy scenarios targeting reductions in incidence rate, disability rate, and case-fatality rate of various chronic diseases in the Australian population.

Users wishing to evaluate more complex prevention policies, such as those targeting risk-factors or requiring heterogeneous effects across ethnic or socioeconomic sub-populations, should submit an enquiry to SHINE.

Design your intervention

Before you get started with a HIIC, you should conceptualise key components of your prevention policy, such as its target demographic, duration, and associated implementation costs. Understanding and accurately defining these input components may require indepedent research, as well as due consideration of what is realistically achievable.

You may wish to input your prevention policy to mimic particular prevention policies outlined in research papers, policy proposals, news media, etc., or simply estimate a hypothetical prevention policy of your own design.

Simulate your intervention

Get started with the HIIC by navigating to hiic.org and specifying the parameters of your prevention policy. An overview of input parameters required to specify interventions is provided below, with links to further documentation for each parameter.

Parameter Description
target_disease

The disease targeted by the intervention. View docs.

target_metric

The metric (incidence rate, disability rate, or case-fatality rate) affected by the intervention. View docs.

target_reduction

The reduction in the selected target_metric coming as a result of the intervention. View docs.

application_type

Whether the intervention is applied on a 'cohort' basis, i.e. to individuals of a certain age in the starting year (2021); or a 'period basis', i.e. to individuals of a certain age in future years. View docs.

target_age

The age group targeted by the intervention. View docs.

target_sex

The sex group targeted by the intervention. View docs.

duration

How many years the intervention lasts for. View docs.

time_lag

The number of years after the base year, 2021, before the intervention commences. View docs.

cost

The present-value of all implementation costs associated with the intervention. View docs.
